How do I add links?

Learn how to create various types of links in the Website Builder design tool.

You can create various types of links in Website Builder:

Add text links

  1. From your Manage Site page, click Edit site or Site Design.
    The Edit site and Site Design links.
  2. In a section with text, click within the text element and select Edit body.
  3. Highlight the text that you wish to add the link to.
  4. In the rich text editor toolbar, click the link icon.
  5. In the Protocol pull-down menu under Link Info, select the protocol:
    • http://
    • https://
    • ftp://
    • news://
    • other
      Note: You can use other to create links of other types, like mailto://
    Select the protocol for the new link.
  6. Enter the URL for the link to the URL field.
    Enter the link URL.
  7. Under Target, select how the link will open.
    • frame
    • popup window
    • New Window (_blank)
    • Topmost Window (_top)
    • Same Window (_self)
    • Parent Window (_parent)
      Note: New Window (_blank) is best practice.
    Select the link target.
  8. Click the OK button.
    Click the OK button.
  9. Publish when ready.
    The Publish button.

Note: In order to add a text link to a PDF file or other document, you will need to first upload the file to Google Drive (or another service).  Important: If you upload the file to Google Drive, you will need to make the document Public in order to have it viewable to your visitors. Learn more.

Add an image link

  1. From your Manage Site page, click Edit site or Site Design.
    The Edit site and Site Design links.
  2. Click the image that you wish to add the link to.
  3. Hover your mouse over the link icon and click Link To.
    The Link To option.
  4. Select the type of of link you wish to add or remove a link.
    • Page - Link to another page on your site.
    • External Url - Link to a page on another website.
    • Scroll to - An anchor link to another section on the same page.
    • Mail - An email link.
    • Telephone - A link to your phone number.
    Select the type of of link.
  5. Select the destination for the link.
    • Page link - Select the page you wish to link to from the Select a page to connect window.
    • External Url - Enter the URL for the page into the External Url field, select if you wish to have the link open in a new window and click the SAVE button.
    • In a new window (External Url) - Open the link in a new browser window.
    • nofollow (External Url) -- Adds a nofollow tag which tells search engines to ignore the link.
    • Scroll to link - Select the section that you wish to link to. When you hover your mouse over the section, an anchor icon will appear. When you select the section, a link icon will appear.
      Note: For Mail and Telephone links, enter the email address or telephone number in the fields provided then click the SAVE button.
  6. Publish when ready.
    The Publish button.

Note: If you wish to be able to right-click and save any images, you will also need to host those images elsewhere then add links to where the images are hosted. When you click the images, they will open in a new tab or window and you'll have the option to right-click and save from there. Web Hosting customers who use Website Builder as their home page can upload these images to File Manager then add the links. 

You can also add a link to your site menu which can go to another page, external website, or another section on the same page.

Add a link to your site menu

  1. From your Manage Site page, click Edit site or Site Design.
    The Edit site and Site Design links.
  2. Click into any of your site menu buttons then select Menu Settings.
  3. On the Website Menu pane under Item, click the Add menu links button.
  4. In the Add a page or a link? window, click Add Link.
    Click the Add Link button.
  5. Enter a link label. This is what will appear in your site menu. Click Add Link.
    Enter a link label and click Add Link.
  6. On your site menu, click the new link button then click Link To.
  7. Select the type of link you wish to add.
    • Page - A link to another page on your site.
    • External URL - A link to a page on another website.
    • Scroll to - An anchor link to another section on the same page.
    • Mail - An email link.
    • Telephone - A link to your phone number.
    Select the type of link.
  8. Select the destination for the link.
    • Page link - Select the page you wish to link to from the Select a page to connect window.
    • External Url - Enter the URL for the page into the External Url field, select if you wish to have the link open in a new window and click the SAVE button.
    • In a new window (External Url) - Open the link in a new browser window.
