How long will authorizations last for my orders?
Authorizations for orders are available in the Order Manager for just under 7 days. This time period is consistent with most issuing banks that store authorizations for 7 days before they expire. If you have not processed the sale of an order by the time the authorization expires, the original authorization cannot be used. When you process the sale of an order after the original authorization expires, an Auth/Capture will be performed where the system checks for an authorization and then processes the sale at the same time.
You may pay higher transaction fees to your merchant account provider for a sale processed as an AuthCapture. If you modify an order, a new authorization may also be needed. Also, there may be times when the sale transaction will fail if the buyer has exceeded their available credit or there is another problem with the card that was not present at the time of the original authorization. Your merchant account provider will most likely charge for the additional transaction as most merchant accounts are structured to pay a small fee for each authorization, sale, and other transaction performed by the merchant.
You will also be unable to complete a sale if the order is older than 30 days. Learn more.
Note: Issuing banks may store authorizations for less than seven days. If the original authorization has expired, when you process the sale of the order, a new authorization will be needed.
